Extinction rates worldwide are accelerating at unprecedented rates, as reported by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) in 2019. It’s safe to conclude that reliance on governments to protect the environment is not working. Many species are likely to go extinct before any preservation efforts begin, or perhaps before they are even discovered. Deforestation rates, estimated by UN FAO, is at around 10 million hectares per year.
Apart from redefining modern cities to heavily integrate forests, alternative livelihood solutions must be established so that land owners and communities surrounding forests are incentivized to keep forests alive, rather than cutting or burning them down.
tekForest aims to foster innovation in eco-friendly materials engineering, sustainable production, bio medicine, and other fields that would benefit both companies and regular people—including local communities that need better, sustainable livelihood alternatives to coal, logging, or mining.
We propose the creation of a network of supporters that fund research and development, and eventually share ownership of research patents for sustainable materials, as well as any revenue generated from them. This can be done through a blockchain-based DAO.
